Help for Headache Sufferers in March Drexel Medcast™

More than 30 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches, which rank in the top 20 of the world’s most disabling medical illnesses. Because of statistics like those, Drexel University College of Medicine is focusing on migraines and other head pain in the latest installment of the Drexel Medcast™, a monthly medical podcast featuring leading academic physicians and scientists from the Drexel University College of Medicine faculty.

This month features an interview with Lee Peterlin, D.O., assistant professor of neurology and director of the Headache Center at Drexel University College of Medicine. During the interview, Dr. Peterlin discusses headache prevention and treatment, including the use of over-the-counter pain medication, which she warns sufferers not to take too often. “If you suffer from frequent headaches, it’s very important to talk to your doctor about treatment options instead of trying to self-medicate each time you have head pain,” says Peterlin. “The danger in overusing pain medication is that you can actually make your headaches worse and turn them into chronic daily headaches.”

The Drexel Medcast™ featuring Dr. Lee Peterlin can be accessed via the homepage of Drexel University College of Medicine’s website (www.drexelmed.edu) or via iTunes and other podcasting directories.  Drexel University College of Medicine launched the Drexel Medcast in August 2007, becoming the first medical school in the Philadelphia region to offer a monthly medical podcast. A new topic and faculty member are featured each month.
