Breast Cancer Questions Answered in October Drexel Medcast

Drexel University College of Medicine has announced that breast cancer is the topic in the October installment of the Drexel Medcast™, a monthly medical podcast with leading academic physicians and scientists from the Drexel University College of Medicine faculty. This month features an interview with Lydia Komarnicky, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology and director of the Cancer Program at Drexel University College of Medicine.

During the interview, Komarnicky, a leading breast cancer expert, discusses various treatment options for breast cancer, including new targeted forms of radiation technology that offer shorter treatment times, fewer side effects, and help spare surrounding tissue. She also talks about risk factors for breast cancer, including one which she says is often misunderstood.

"I don’t want to diminish family history, which is very important, but the majority of women with breast cancer do not have family history. Age is really the most important risk factor, which is why it's so important for women over 40 to get a yearly mammogram."

Even though there have been many breast cancer awareness campaigns in recent years, Komarnicky says there is a still a gap in knowledge and action in terms of women getting mammograms.

Drexel University College of Medicine launched the Drexel Medcast in 2007, becoming the first medical school in the Philadelphia region to offer a monthly medical podcast. A new topic and faculty member are featured each month.
