03/21/2006 - Drexel Doctors on Discovery Health Channel

Two faculty physicians from Drexel University College of Medicine will be featured on separate upcoming episodes of the hit show “Mystery Diagnosis.” The series, which airs on the Discovery Health Channel, follows the stories of patients who search for years for an accurate diagnosis to a perplexing health problem before finally getting answers and proper treatment.

Howard Miller, M.D., Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Internal Medicine, was interviewed for a story involving a patient he diagnosed with diabetes insipidus several years ago. The woman had been experiencing difficulties for several years and her condition was missed by three or four doctors before Dr. Miller was able to piece together her symptoms and treat her.

For Carolyn O’Connor, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology, the patient and condition were different, but the scenario was very similar - a young woman who went to many doctors and still had no answers. Dr. O’Connor’s patient was suffering fevers, weight loss, swollen lymph nodes, and joint pain. She was told she might have cancer or AIDS. It turned out it was lupus. Today, that patient is taking medication and doing well.

This isn’t the College of Medicine’s first experience with Mystery Diagnosis. A production crew from the show was also on campus last fall to tape an episode featuring Katherine Sherif, M.D., Director of the Drexel Center for Women’s Health. Dr. Sherif’s episode, in which she diagnosed a woman with Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome, is still airing on the Discovery Health Channel.

The episode featuring Dr. Miller (tentatively titled Episode 15) premieres April 10 on Discovery Health. Dr O’Connor’s episode (Episode 17) premieres June 12. Check your local listings for exact times and rebroadcasts.
