05.30.2006 - National Leadership Program Names New Class of Fellows

Class Selected from among Academic Health’s Most Promising Women Leaders.

Forty-eight senior women faculty have been selected for the 2006-2007 class of ELAM fellows, it was announced today by the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women.  ELAM, a core program of the Institute for Women’s Health and Leadership at Drexel University College of Medicine, is the only national program dedicated to preparing senior women faculty for leadership at academic health centers. The new fellows represent 45 medical, dental and public health schools. This is the first year that candidates from public health institutions will participate in the program.

“We welcome our twelfth class of fellows and look forward to being part of their learning and growth over the coming year,” says Page S. Morahan, Ph.D., ELAM Co-Director and a founder of the program. “The ELAM fellowship experience is like no other, providing opportunities for self-reflection, application of new concepts and perspectives, and entry into a network of women leaders eager to support each other’s advancement.”

The ELAM curriculum includes traditional MBA training, in areas such as finance and organizational theory, oriented toward the academic health center environment. It also incorporates activities that enhance personal and professional development around leadership, career advancement, communication, and the use of new information/learning technologies.

During their year with ELAM, fellows gain a broader and deeper knowledge of the challenges facing academic health centers through meetings with national leaders in the field, interactions with their peers in the program, and interviews with a wide range of senior officers at their own institutions. Fellows also undertake a long-term action project that addresses an institutional need or goal while providing an opportunity for leadership and greater visibility.

ELAM’s mission is to increase the number of women at AHCs in leadership positions and their success rate in attaining and remaining in these positions. More than 50 of its 425 graduates currently serve in the highest-level leadership ranks, from associate dean through university president, including 4 of the 12 women deans at U.S. medical schools, 3 of the 10 women deans at U.S. dental schools, and 1 of the 5 women deans at U.S. osteopathic schools.

“ELAM intervenes at a critical stage in a woman’s professional career and provides her with the skills, information and peer networks to help her advance to the top,” explains Dr. Morahan.  “Once there, our graduates have proven their ability to manage the challenges of leadership, helping their institutions navigate the curricular, organizational and policy changes needed to improve education, research, practitioner training, and ultimately the delivery of health services to the public.”
