Drexel University College of Medicine has announced the next installment of the Drexel Medcast™, a monthly medical podcast featuring leading academic physicians and scientists from the Drexel University College of Medicine faculty. This month features an interview with Mark Abdelmalek, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology and chief of the Division of Laser and Dermatologic Surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine.

Every year the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) recognizes 10 outstanding teachers of new physicians nationwide. William Sonis, M.D., professor in the Department of Psychiatry and director of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training Program, is among those to receive the 2008 Parker J. Palmer “Courage to Teach” Award. This honor is given to distinguished program directors who are nominated by faculty and residents in recognition of their commitment to teaching and development of innovative and effective residency programs.

A team of residents from Drexel University College of Medicine is getting their buzzers ready for the next round of competition after winning the Southeastern Pennsylvania regional round of the American College of Physicians’ national medical jeopardy competition, Doctor’s Dilemma.

Ana Núñez, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Medicine and director of the Center of Excellence and Women’s Health Education Program (WHEP) at Drexel University College of Medicine, has been awarded a three-year grant for $1.5 million by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Women’s Health/Office of Public Health and Science. This grant, entitled the “Mind-Spirit-Body-Health Collaborative,” will support a project with an ultimate goal of reducing gender and ethnic health disparities.

Carolyn O’Connor, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Medicine and chief of the Division of Rheumatology, will be featured in an upcoming episode of the hit show “Mystery Diagnosis,” which airs on the Discovery Health Channel. The series follows the stories of patients who search for years for an accurate diagnosis to a perplexing health problem before finally getting answers and proper treatment.
