Drexel University College of Medicine is committed to providing every medical student the opportunity to participate in research. In an effort to formalize the various opportunities, we propose to establish the M.D. Research Scientist Programs. In these programs there would be the option to do research between the first and second years and/or for a year between years 2 and 3. In the event that a student wishes to enter the MD/PhD Program, qualifications, including participation in these programs would be a consideration for entry into the MD/PhD Program.
Summer Research (between years 1 and 2):
Students are encouraged to identify a faculty member with whom they wish to spend 10 weeks doing research. A list of faculty interested in having a student is maintained in the Office of Student Research. In conjunction with the faculty member, the student must present a research proposal that includes the goals of the 10 week summer research experience. The program includes weekly seminars for these students and the requirement to present the results of their summer research at the annual research day in October. Students will receive a modest stipend to participate in the program (currently $175.00/week).
One year research project
The opportunity to participate in research for a year after the second year of medical school prior to beginning formal clinical rotations will be available to a limited number of students. Students will identify a research mentor and develop a research plan with the mentor. The student will be provided a stipend equivalent to the estimated cost of living allowance (rent, food, personal, health insurance) for student loans (currently $18,205/year).
Research electives
Virtually all of the Pathways allow a student to spend up to 2 blocks (8 weeks) doing research. The research proposal must be approved by the Special Electives Committee to insure that the student gets the optimal research experience.
Research Pathway
The Research Pathway includes 4 blocks of research in the fourth year. Students who choose this pathway must obtain approval of their research proposal from the Pathway director and the Special Electives Committee. In addition to the four blocks of research, students in the research pathway must complete 6 blocks of clinical electives.
