Richard P. Malone, M.D., a nationally known figure in autism research, established and directs the Drexel Autism Center. Dr. Malone is a professor of psychiatry at Drexel University College of Medicine.

The Drexel Autism Center includes an interdisciplinary team composed of child psychiatrists, a pediatric nurse practitioner, a psychologist and a pediatric neurologist.

The mission of the Drexel Autism Center is to advance knowledge about autism through research and to provide services to affected children and their families. Currently, the center is conducting treatment studies that are funded by the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institute of Mental Health. Apart from giving families the opportunity to be involved in clinical research studies, the center offers evaluations and ongoing treatment for children not enrolled in studies. The center is also involved in providing educational programs to schools, community agencies and hospitals to increase awareness of autism and some of the current treatments available.

Dr. Malone is co-director of the Drexel University College of Medicine Autism Consortium, a multidisciplinary program based in the College of Medicine that seeks to understand the neurobiological deficits underlying autism and to develop new, improved options for treatment.
