Second Year A comprehensive series of lectures in basic clinical dermatology during the Introduction to Clinical Medicine course concentrates on the diagnosis of common dermatologic conditions with an emphasis on those diseases that may be recognized and initially treated by generalist physicians. Basic diagnostic procedures will be introduced. Also, a two hour lecture on dermatopathology is provided for students.
Fourth Year Clinical Dermatology A four-week elective in clinical dermatology will emphasize the clinical diagnosis and treatment of common dermatologic diseases. Students will receive a series of eight basic lectures per period from dermatology residents. In addition, rotating students evaluate patients with residents and attendings in clinic and private practice sessions, and one student is assigned to the inpatient consult resident each week. Ambulatory dermatology is emphasized. Attendance at the eight hours of didactic training each week is mandatory including Dermatopathology Conference, Grand Rounds, Journal Club and the Basic Science Lecture Series.
Dermatopathology Also available is a fourth-year elective in dermatopathology. One or two students each period will review approximately 80 skin biopsy specimens per day and will be present at the sign-out of these biopsies with the dermatopathologist and dermatopathology fellow. The student will have access to all the slides for informal review after the completion of the session and will be expected to learn the principal diagnostic histologic features of all common inflammatory skin diseases and skin tumors. |
