Marion Spencer Fay, Ph.D., was dean and president of Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania from 1946 to 1963. The National Board for Women in Medicine established an award in her name in 1963. This award, now in its 46th year, is given annually to a woman physician or scientist who has made an exceptionally significant contribution to health care as a practitioner, medical educator, administrator or research scientist, and who exhibits significant future potential.
The presentation ceremony, attended by the honoree’s colleagues and distinguished academic, medical and scientific leaders, will be held in Philadelphia on April 20, 2009, in conjunction with the spring session of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program. The award includes a $15,000 grant to support the recipient’s work.
The award recipient will be selected from nominations submitted to a special committee, appointed by the Institute and dedicated to the principles of the Marion Spencer Fay Award.

2007 Marion Spencer Fay Award Recipient
Carolyn M. Mazure, Ph.D., a renowned scientist from Yale with national leadership credentials in gender health research, has been selected as the 2007 Marion Spencer Fay Award recipient for exceptional contributions to science and health care.
Dr. Mazure, director of Women’s Health Research at Yale, will receive the honor at ceremonies on Thursday, December 6, in a presentation made by Drexel’s Institute for Women’s Health and Leadership (IWHL).
A professor of Psychiatry and associate dean for Faculty Affairs at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Mazure has led the way in innovative research in depression, demonstrating the value of gender-specific data. By integrating that research into interdisciplinary science, she has enhanced the focus on the need for gender related health data.
“Dr. Mazure’s ability to mobilize interdisciplinary researchers has created a national model for women’s health research,” said Lynn Yeakel, director of IWHL. “She was selected from 26 outstanding women physicians and scientists nominated by leaders in academic medicine throughout North America.”
The December 6 award presentation, at a reception in the Horizons Ballroom atop the Sheraton Center City Philadelphia Hotel, will take place at 5:45 pm, immediately following Dr. Mazure’s lecture, titled "Women's Health Research: From Vision to Innovation." The lecture is co-hosted by Drexel’s School of Public Health as part of the Drexel Health Partners Grand Rounds Lecture Series and will be in Geary B Auditorium in the New College Building at 4:30.
