It is anticipated that within the next two to three decades, heart failure will assume epidemic proportions. Drexel University College of Medicine cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons are well prepared to meet this challenge.

University research in cardiovascular medicine and surgery involves studying novel progression and containment mechanisms of heart failure, such as apoptosis or suicidal death of heart muscle. Additional research involves mechanical studies. Molecular muscle replacement also is an area of interest, involving stem cell and technology-based investigations, and tissue-engineered hearts. This research is aided by refined noninvasive techniques for the superior diagnosis of cardiovascular conditions that lead to heart failure.

Drexel University College of Medicine has one of the strongest teams of non-invasive imaging cardiologists in the country working to develop novel approaches. Their work ranges from 3D imaging and characterization of cardiac tissues to targeted echocardiographic and molecular nuclear imaging. Additionally, the mega-clinical trials unit is engaged in testing state-of-the-art pharmacologic and catheter-based technology for the management of coronary artery disease and clot-lysis during heart attacks.
