In February 2001, Hahnemann University Hospital was selected as one of only five sites in the nation to test the world's first fully implantable artificial heart. Hahnemann cardiothoracic surgeons have been active in the research of this device for more than five years and have trained other surgeons in this procedure.

The AbioCor implantable replacement heart is an advanced medical system developed by ABIOMED, Inc. to extend and improve the lives of patients who would otherwise die of heart failure. The AbioCor, designed to fully sustain the body's circulatory system, is intended to serve as an alternative to heart transplantation, the current method of saving patients with failing natural hearts.
