The result of these discussions was a shared vision and a plan for collaboration in basic science research between Philadelphia Health & Education Corporation, DUCOM and FCCC. Because of complementary strengths, the expectation was that FCCC and DUCOM could mutually benefit from increased interactions, and a formal agreement was signed in early 2004.
Today, eight FCCC scientists have adjunct appointments in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology here at the College of Medicine. These scientists are also members of the graduate faculty at DUCOM and are eligible to serve as primary mentors for College of Medicine Ph.D, M.D./Ph.D. and M.S. students in the Biochemistry and Molecular and Cell Biology and Genetics graduate programs.
Jonathan Chernoff, M.D., Ph.D., serves as the faculty liaison to DUCOM for this group and in this capacity is a member of the Biomedical Graduate Education Committee, the oversight body for biomedical graduate education here at DUCOM.
“The partnership provides our graduate students with access to the scientists and research facilities of the world class Fox Chase Cancer Center,” said Barry Waterhouse, Ph.D., Vice Dean, Biomedical Graduate and Postgraduate Studies.
“Furthermore, as instructors, FCCC scientists add significantly to our graduate course offerings in cancer biology, biochemistry and molecular biology,” continued Dr. Waterhouse.
