Master of Laboratory Animal Science (MLAS) Progam Minimize

Program Overview

The Master of Laboratory Animal Science (MLAS) degree is a full-time two year program (or up to 4 years part-time) designed for students who want to pursue advanced careers in laboratory animal science or laboratory animal facility management. Most classes are scheduled in late afternoon and early evening to accommodate working professionals. The MLAS degree is also a proven enhancement to your veterinary school application.

The MLAS program is the right choice for you if:

• You want to enhance your veterinary school application with the specialization a master’s degree provides
• You are interested in pursuing other career alternatives in animal science other than veterinary medicine

Who Should Apply?

The MLAS program was designed for individuals who have a bachelor’s degree in animal science or a related field and who are seeking advanced career positions in laboratory animal science and laboratory animal facility management. With an MLAS degree, you can hold a supervisory position in biotechnology, pharmaceutical companies, and institutions of higher learning. An MLAS degree is also a powerful means to boost your credentials for admission to veterinary school.

Student Testimonials

"I've been accepted to Penn! My interviewer called me a few hours after the interview to deliver the good news. All of my hard work with MLAS and the interview preparations really paid off"-Jennifer Mitchell, MLAS '03

"When I first started in the MLAS program I wanted to become a veterinarian. However, after my first year, I learned about other exciting opportunities in the animal science field and decided to pursue a career in Lab Animal Management. I finished my MLAS degree with a handful of job offers for supervisory positions and I am now a facility manager”…Andrea Scarry, MLAS ‘00

"Well, I've heard back from Michigan State University. I am officially a member of the Class of 2007. I can't express how excited I am. It's a dream come true."... Kelly Sovey, MLAS '03

Application Procedures
application form

Candidates for admission must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with a focus on animal science or a related field, such as biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, physiology, microbiology, zoology, or pre-veterinary studies. In addition to the completed application, applicants must submit three letters of recommendation (two from science professors and one from a veterinarian or employer), a statement of goals, and any official transcripts.

Applicants must also submit official scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

The deadline for submission of applications is July 1st of the year the student seeks admission. Note however, that we have a rolling admissions policy, so it is best to submit completed applications early.
