Biography

Christof Daetwyler, M.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Family Community and Preventive Medicine. His focus is on academics, specifically integrating computer technology and alternative media with medical education.

Dr. Daetwyler graduated from the Higher School of Fine Art in Zurich, Switzerland, before changing tracks and attending the University of Zurich Medical School. While he was there he and a group of fellow students were instrumental in enhancing the medical school curriculum. In his spare time, he began learning computer programming.

In 1994 he began his professional career with two jobs at the University of Berne Medical School: one as a curriculum designer for the third year medical students, and the other in a very new field as a producer of videos and developer of computer applications for medical education at the Department of Educational Media (AUM). Dr. Daetwyler joined the Dartmouth Interactive Media Lab team in 2001, where he was involved in the development of such programs as "Smoking Cessation for Pregnancy and Beyond" and the "Virtual Terrorism Response Academy."

Dr. Daetwyler joined the College of Medicine in 2004, continuing his pursuit of innovation in medical education with the creation of doc.com, a series of 41 media-rich online modules for the teaching and assessment of healthcare communication skills. He is now working on WebOSCE, an online technology that will allow students to practice new skills using online standardized patients.
