Dr. Schulman is chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and director of the Drexel Allergy and Asthma Center. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Schulman is widely respected in all aspects of respiratory medicine. In 1987, he became chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Hahnemann University (now Drexel University College of Medicine). Between 1995 and 2000 he also served as associate chair of research for the Department of Medicine. Dr. Schulman is a reviewer for a number of subspecialty journals and has served as a reviewer on NIH study sections.

Allergies Stronger, Longer This Spring

Dr. Edward Schulman was interviewed regarding the increasing intensity and duration of allergy suffering during this Spring season.

Research

Dr. Schulman's major research interest has been understanding the human lung mast cell and he pioneered the techniques for the first ever purification of this cell type in 1982. He has been widely regarded as an expert in human lung hypersensitivity reactions, mast cell biology, immunopharmacology of the mast cell, and airway pathophysiology. He has published over 160 peer reviewed articles, reviews, abstracts and book chapters on the mast cell and airway reactivity.

Dr. Schulman has been an established National Institutes of Health and industry-sponsored research investigator of fundamental mechanisms of human lung mast cell biology, asthma and airway disorders. He holds patents related to novel mechanisms of mast cell activation and their control. He has also been the principal investigator and co-investigator of numerous clinical studies in rhinitis, asthma and airway disorders.

Dr. Schulman lectures regionally, nationally, and internationally on mechanisms of allergy and asthma, mechanisms and control of mast cell activation, and pathophysiology and treatment of asthma and COPD.
