James (Jack) E. Wilberger, Jr. received his undergraduate degree in journalism at the University of Richmond, graduating summa cum laude in 1974. He then matriculated at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia, receiving his medical degree with highest honors in 1978.
From 1978 through 1984, Wilberger undertook neurosurgical training at the University of Pittsburgh under the direction and tutelage of Dr. Peter Jannetta.
On completion of his residency, Wilberger joined the faculty of Allegheny General Hospital, the Western Regional Campus of Drexel University College of Medicine in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he continues to practice to this day. His specialities include epilepsy, peripheral nerve and spine surgery.
Wilberger has distinguished himself in the field of neurotrauma through his past and ongoing efforts to improve the treatment and outcomes from both spinal cord injury and head injury. He is a past chairman of the Joint Section on Neurotrauma and Critical Care of the AANS/CNS and is currently actively involved with the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma He was an author of the seminal Guidelines on the Management of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury. He was recently appointed chairman of the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation.
Wilberger is a member of the Society of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. He has published widely with over 130 articles in peer-reviewed journals and over 70 book chapters to date. He is the author and/or editor of four current neurosurgical texts, including Neurotrauma (McGraw Hill, New York, 1997).
Wilberger is professor and chairman of neurosurgery at Allegheny General Hospital. In 2009 he was appointed chairman of neurosurgery at Drexel University College of Medicine. He also directs neurosurgery for the West Penn Alegheny Health System. He serves as co-director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program
From 1997-2007 Wilberger served as vice dean of the AGH regional campus of Drexel University College of Medicine. In 2007 he was appointed chairman of the Council of Graduate Medical Education and Designated Institutional Official for AGH. He was recently appointed vice president for graduate medical education for the West Penn Allegheny Health System as well as a member of the board of directors of the West Penn Allegheny Health System.
Wilberger remains active in state and local neurosurgical affairs, serving as past president of the Pennsylvania Neurosurgical Society and for ten years as editor of the Bulletin - the official publication of the Allegheny County Medical Society, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He recently served on the board of directors of the Allegheny County Medical Society. He was listed in Best Doctors in America for 2011-2012.
