Biography

John M. Fontaine, M.D., FACC, is professor of medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine and director of cardiac arrhythmia services and the cardiology fellowship training program. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiology and clinical cardiac electrophysiology. His clinical activities include cardiac electrophysiology services, such as implantation of cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators, cardiac arrhythmia management via electrophysiological testing, and ablation therapy, with recent emphasis on ablation therapy for atrial fibrillation. Arrhythmia services also include implementation of new modalities such as T wave alternans testing and heart rate turbulence assessment for risk stratification for sudden cardiac death and device-based therapy for cardiac resynchronization.

Fontaine received his medical degree from the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, formerly Rutgers School of Medicine in Piscataway, N.J., and underwent cardiology fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Currently, he is a member of the Heart Rhythm Society and the American Heart Association, as well as a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He has been a two-time member of the board of directors of the Association of Black Cardiologists and is a lifetime member of that organization. He served on the Clinical Trials Review Committee at the National Institutes of Health and is currently a member of the NIH`s study section: Electronic Signaling, Ion Transport and Arrhythmias. Dr. Fontaine is involved with numerous organizations that focus on outcomes research and disparities in health care.
