Biography

Dr. Joseph Queenan joined the faculty of Drexel University College of Medicine as an assistant professor in 2004. He is a board-certified neurosurgeon with wide-ranging experience in the use of microsurgical technique to treat various disorders of the spine, as well as the brain.

Queenan obtained his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991. He did his residency at Case Western Reserve University Hospital in Ohio and later at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York. He continued his training in New York as a fellow in pediatric neurosurgery, with a concentration in spinal cord tumors, at Beth Israel Hospital. Upon completion of his fellowship, he moved to the Greater Philadelphia area, where he worked at Cooper Hospital in New Jersey for three years before joining the staff of Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Delaware as chief pediatric neurosurgeon. He continued to work part time for Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children and joined the staff of Hahnemann University Hospital in 2004; he was named chief shortly thereafter.

His outpatient practices include Hahnemann Neurosurgery and University Spine Institute. He performs cranial procedures such as decompression, shunting for cerebral spinal fluid anomalies and excision of tumors. Queenan works closely with Drexel’s Neurosciences Department to assess and treat patients who might benefit from a shunting procedure to treat normal pressure hydrocephalus. He is also known for his methodical approach to spinal disorders – degenerative and traumatic, as well as congenital – in which he assesses the least-intrusive path to the patient’s spinal health. In addition to his outpatient practices in Center City, Queenan is an on-call neurosurgeon for Hahnemann University Hospital’s Level I trauma center. He is also an adviser for the Drexel University College of Medicine Neurosurgery Interest Group.

This doctor is a non-compensated member of the teaching faculty of Drexel University College of Medicine.
