Background and Interests:

Using murine models of Influenza type A virus infections, we are currently investigating the signaling and costimulatory requirements needed for generation of effective anti-viral CD8+ T cell responses. These components have been found to signal through multiple pathways, regulating proliferation and death of CD8+ T cells during anti-viral immune responses. In addition to their effects on primary responses, their functions in the generation of memory and secondary responses are also being studied. Elucidation of the signaling components required for CD8+ T cell responses may advance current knowledge regarding the role of T cell signaling during chronic infections and autoimmunity. It may also help to uncover potential targets for novel interventions that will modulate effector or memory CD8+ T cell responses against tumors or pathogens.
