A Welcome Message From the Chair
Hello and welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology at Drexel University College of Medicine/Hahnemann University Hospital. We appreciate your interest and hope that this website gives you an overview of the department and addresses your questions.
The Department of Anesthesiology at Drexel University College of Medicine/Hahnemann University Hospital is an academically focused program, comprising attending faculty anesthesiologists, anesthesiology residents, certified registered nurse anesthetists, medical students, and student registered nurse anesthetists. From time to time, residents from other medical specialties, paramedics and other allied health professionals also participate in our educational program. We provide perioperative clinical care to all types of patients at Hahnemann University Hospital undergoing a wide variety of procedures, including open-heart, transplant and robotic-assisted surgery, to name a few.
As Philadelphia's Center City trauma center and with an active helicopter aeromedical program, one of our more important activities is the care of the critically injured trauma patient, both in the operating room and intensive care unit. The department also provides obstetric analgesia in the labor and delivery unit at Hahnemann and maintains an active acute and chronic pain management program. Our residents obtain a rich experience in pediatric anesthesiology at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and additional specialized training at Abington Memorial Hospital.
The department has an active and varied basic and clinical science research program, exploring and adding to the body of knowledge in areas as diverse as blood coagulation, postoperative cognitive dysfunction, anesthesia biomedical engineering, and undersea and high-pressure biology.
Our ACGME-accredited residency in anesthesiology is the main focus of the department; our residents enjoy a personalized, resident-centered experience designed to prepare them to confidently enter one of the most demanding and high-risk areas of medicine. Our graduates have gone on to enjoy success in both private practice and academic anesthesiology throughout the United States and in other countries. Exciting developments include future programs in perioperative management and administration, health policy, anesthesia for the developing world, and aerospace medicine. An added benefit is the dynamic city of Philadelphia, one of America's largest multicultural cities, offering something for everyone in a central northeast location, convenient to New York City, Washington, D.C., and other metro areas, and in close proximity to the Pocono Mountains and Atlantic Ocean seashore.
Again, welcome. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have more questions or if I can be of any assistance.
