Tissue Procurement Facility

Department of Pathology: Tissue Procurement Facility

The Tissue Procurement Facility (TPF) is a service provided by Drexel University College of Medicine’s Pathology Department to prospectively obtain autopsy and surgically resected tissue for research while safeguarding all aspects of patient care. 

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) authorizes our TPF facility to obtain tissue for research that would otherwise be resected for medical purposes and discarded. 

Advantages of Using the Tissue Procurement Facility

  • TPF is able to procure human neoplastic tissues as well as normal tissue from Autopsy and surgical resections.
  • TPF collects tissue samples and processes them as required by each individual investigator.
  • TPF provides quality samples, linked to pathology diagnosis, while maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • TPF maintains a database to track relevant information pertaining to the samples collected such as patient demographics and diagnosis.
  • Tissue is processed immediately and can be delivered fresh
  • Tissue can be handled by sterile techniques if requested by the investigator.
  • The location of the TPF at DUCOM is convenient.
  • Specimens may be picked up by the investigator from the TPF to avoid shipping charges
  • Pathologists from DUCOM oversee the tissue procurement
  • Surgical pathology reports are provided for each specimen.

A skilled technologist works with surgeons, pathologists, and researchers to maximize the scientific value of the acquired tissue without compromising diagnostic processing. These technologists also oversee designation of diagnostic histological sections so investigators can correlate pathologic features with their data. 

In addition, the TPF provides investigators access to histopathologic parameters available from the final diagnostic report while preserving individual patient confidentiality. 

Tissues may be obtained fresh (including sterile for establishment of cell culture), frozen in liquid nitrogen, embedded in the cryopreservative O.C.T., or fixed in formalin and paraffin embedded.
