Jan. 1, 2009 - Dr. David Tabby Discusses Multiple Sclerosis in January Medcast™
Multiple sclerosis is the topic in the January installment of the Drexel Medcast™, a monthly medical podcast with leading academic physicians and scientists from the Drexel University College of Medicine faculty.
This month features an interview with David Tabby, D.O., associate professor of neurology and medical director of the Multiple Sclerosis Center at Drexel University College of Medicine. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system, which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves.
During the interview, Tabby discusses the signs and symptoms of MS, possible causes of the disease, and the challenges of making an MS diagnosis. Right now there is no single lab test to determine if someone has MS, and the symptoms can vary from person to person.
“Some people present with double vision, some have balance problems, some have weakness or numbness from the trunk down, including the legs,” said Tabby. “The good news is the diagnosis of MS is somewhat easier today than it was in the past because of advances in MRI technology.”
Tabby also discusses new treatment options, including several currently in clinical trials.
