April 1, 2009 - Dr. Carolyn O’Connor Offers Insight and Advice about Osteoporosis in April Medcast

This month's Medcast® features an interview with Carolyn O’Connor, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Medicine and chief of the Division of Rheumatology. Dr. O’Connor is also the co-author of the book Osteoporosis for Dummies.

Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones which causes them to be more fragile and likely to fracture, most commonly in the hip or spine. The condition is most prevalent in post-menopausal women, but it also affects men and younger people as well.

“In the early stages of osteoporosis there is absolutely no pain or symptoms, which is why it is called a silent disease,” says O’Connor. “It is only during the advanced stage of osteoporosis when there is any pain at all.”

During the interview, O’Connor discusses risk factors for developing osteoporosis, testing for the condition, and various treatment options. She also offers tips for maintaining strong bones.
