June 12, 2009 - Students Seek Medical Supplies for Upcoming African Aid Trip
Several second-year medical students will travel to Cameroon, Africa, from July 8 to August 10 to help a local surgeon deliver much needed medical supplies and services to remote villagers in the surrounding area.
This is the first year Drexel students will be working with Dr. Georges Mbwelle. Together, they will journey into the country's rural areas to help their most medically underserved population. Mbwelle provides his time free of charge but depends upon contributions and moonlighting income to purchase surgical and medical supplies used during these trips.
In advance of their trip, the students are pleading for donations of medical supplies and funds to ship to the embassy in Yaoundé where they can be securely held for those who need it. If you have supplies you feel would help or can donate toward the success of their mission, please visit their website. The student-made website also has a list of supplies needed and provides more information on these trips, in addition to instructions on making a tax-deductible donation to the College of Medicine Student Government Association, the group collecting contributions for this effort.
"We are paying for our own airfare and living expenses while there, but your help in underwriting the costs for medical supplies will make a huge difference in the lives of these remote villagers and is greatly appreciated," says Zach Massi, one of the five attending students.
To read more about these trips, you may visit the Web log of the Chief Consular Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Yaoundé.
The deadline for support is Friday, July 3.
