July 1, 2009 - Dr. Joyann Kroser Speaks on Acid Reflux, Celiac Disease and Other Digestive Disorders

Each year, nearly 20 million adults are diagnosed with some type of digestive disorder, ranging from irritable bowel syndrome to celiac disease. Those conditions are among the topics discussed in the July edition of the Drexel Medcast®, a monthly medical podcast with leading academic physicians and scientists from the Drexel University College of Medicine faculty. This month features an interview with Joyann Kroser, M.D., associate professor of medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology.

During the interview, Kroser talks about the symptoms of various digestive conditions, as well as tests to diagnose gastrointestinal problems and various treatment options. She also discusses the need for everyone to undergo a colonoscopy by age 50, unless earlier directed by a physician.

“I can’t stress how important it is for people to have their colonoscopies when they’re due for them,” said Kroser. “This is the best test we have to prevent colon cancer.”

Kroser also discusses a relatively new type of diagnostic tool called a capsule endoscopy, also known as a pill camera, which is swallowed by a patient. “The pill cam captures images from inside the gut for 8 hours and sends them wirelessly to a monitor worn on the patient’s belt. When the patient returns, we download the images into a computer and I review a video of the person’s entire digestive tract.”
