Nov. 2, 2009 - Dr. Sandra Levison Offers Insight into Kidney Disease in November Medcast

Twenty-six million Americans have kidney disease, which is the topic of the November edition of the Drexel Medcast®. The Drexel Medcast is a monthly medical podcast with leading academic physicians and scientists from the Drexel University College of Medicine faculty.

This month features an interview with Sandra Levison, M.D., professor in the Division of Nephrology, who specializes in kidney disease and hypertension.

“Very early on in kidney disease, there are no symptoms,” says Levison. “The good news is that with good control of blood pressure and other medications, we can now prevent kidney disease from progressing to the level of kidney function loss where a person would either die or need some means of support like dialysis or transplant.”

During the interview, Levison discusses all aspects of kidney disease, including the connection between high blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney function. She also answers questions on kidney stones and urinary tract infections, and offers general guidelines for maintaining good kidney health.
