Jan. 1, 2010 – Complementary Medicine Is Topic of January Drexel Medcast

Dr. Jennifer Hamilton discusses the benefits and risks of alternative treatments.

Ever hear the terms complementary, alternative, or integrative medicine and wonder what they mean? This diverse group of medical philosophies and practices is the focus of the January edition of the Drexel Medcast®. The Drexel Medcast is a monthly medical podcast with leading academic physicians and scientists from the Drexel University College of Medicine faculty. This month features an interview with Jennifer Hamilton, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Family, Community, and Preventive Medicine. Hamilton specializes in complementary and alternative medicine.

“There is more to health than taking pills and tracking blood test results,” said Hamilton, who cites acupuncture, chiropractic, herbalism, and aromatherapy as various forms of complementary medicine. “This type of medicine doesn’t put as much emphasis on prescription medication as conventional medicine.”

During the interview, Hamilton discusses why complementary medicine isn’t as widely accepted in the United States as it is in other parts of the world, and why research in this area is not widespread. She also has a warning for listeners. “There is so much information out there on the Internet and people need to be aware that just because something says it’s ‘all natural’ doesn’t mean its safe.”
