"We are excited to be affiliated with Drexel University's prestigious College of Medicine, and to be able to contribute to the education of these exceptional young physicians-in-training," said Shore Medical Center President and CEO Ron Johnson. "I believe Shore will provide an exciting learning opportunity for the students who want to do a rotation with us. The medical center offers advanced technology, clinical expertise and high quality care with a patient-centered focus."
Jeanne Rowe, M.D., Shore Medical Center's newly appointed Chief Medical Officer, will serve as the program's Director of Medical Education. She will work closely with leaders at Drexel University College of Medicine to provide program oversight and coordination. Under Rowe's supervision, Shore will collaborate with Drexel in selecting the teaching staff, implementing the medical school's curriculum and ensuring the program satisfies the appropriate certification, licensure and registration requirements as prescribed by law, regulation and/or accreditation standards. It is anticipated that Shore will offer one-month rotations in approximately 10 medical fields, with a clinical director and between four and five teaching physicians staffing each area.
"All of us at Shore are committed to providing a robust and stimulating learning environment and educational experience for the students who choose an elective rotation at our medical center," said Dr. Rowe. "The passionate and exceptional physicians who we have on staff will prove to be an excellent resource for the students as they work to earn their medical degrees."
Barbara Schindler, M.D., vice dean for academic and educational affairs at Drexel University College of Medicine, says the new affiliation will be a wonderful benefit to both institutions. "We are very excited to establish this partnership with Shore Medical Center," said Schindler. "From the quality of patient care to the caliber of physicians to the technological advances, Shore is an excellent environment for our students to achieve an exceptional clinical education."
Raymond S. Schreyer, M.D., of Regional Nephrology Associates in Northfield, NJ, facilitated the initial contact between Shore and Drexel. According to Dr. Schreyer, who is a member of the Drexel University College of Medicine Alumni Association's Board of Directors, the mutual benefits were obvious from the start.
"Given Shore's transformation into a leading, regional medical center and Drexel's standing as one of the largest private colleges of medicine, it seemed logical to try and structure an affiliation between the two organizations," said Dr. Schreyer, who is board certified in internal medicine, nephrology, critical care medicine and geriatric medicine and will serve as clinical director for the program's nephrology rotation.
"From Shore's perspective, I believe the quality of medicine being practiced at the facility will be improved through our providing these rotations. We as physicians and educators will need to be at our best. Additionally, as we impart our knowledge and experience to the students, the information will be spread throughout the medical center and create a high quality healthcare environment for staff, students and patients, alike."
