Philadelphia, PA (December 1, 2011) – December is AIDS Awareness Month. It has been more than 30 years since the HIV/AIDS epidemic began. An estimated 33.3 million individuals are infected with HIV worldwide. In the United States, more than 1.5 million people are living with HIV, according to a 2010 report issued by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS.

Philadelphia, PA (November 4, 2011) - Ana Núñez, M.D., and the Women's Health Education Program (WHEP) at Drexel University College of Medicine were recently awarded a $1.5 million grant to enhance "Philadelphia Ujima Coalition for a Healthier Community," which is part of the gender-based national "Coalition for a Healthier Community" initiative. WHEP will receive $300,000 a year for the next five years to support its evidence-based health interventions targeting women and girls in the community. The Drexel University College of Medicine program is one of ten chosen from across the country and the only one in Pennsylvania.

Philadelphia, PA (November 1, 2011) Daniel V. Schidlow, M.D., has been appointed interim dean and senior vice president of health affairs at Drexel University College of Medicine, effective November 1, 2011. Schidlow replaces Richard V. Homan, M.D., who recently resigned from the College.

Philadelphia, PA (October 27, 2011) Dennis Novack, M.D., professor of medicine and associate dean for medical education, will be honored by the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) for his outstanding contributions to academic medicine. Novack will receive the Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award, which will be presented November 5, during the association's annual meeting in Denver.

Dr. Julie Overbaugh spent two decades in Kenya working to prevent the spread of HIV

Philadelphia, PA (October 24, 2011) — Julie Overbaugh, Ph.D., has dedicated most of her career to HIV prevention and AIDS research, with a focus on understanding the biology of HIV transmission −particularly transmission to women and infants. For her unique contributions in increasing understanding of transmission and pathogenesis, her leadership in treatment and prevention strategies for infected women in the developing world, her pioneering research collaborative in Kenya and her noteworthy mentoring activities, Overbaugh was selected from a national pool of candidates to present the 2011 Marion Spencer Fay Award Lecture at 4:15 p.m. on Oct. 27 at Drexel University College of Medicine's Geary Auditorium (245 N. 15th St., Philadelphia).
