More than 170 Drexel University College of Medicine faculty members were selected by Best Doctors Inc. for Best Doctors in America 2011-12. Only about 5 percent of physicians practicing in the United States are selected each year.

Philadelphia, PA (June 1, 2011) - Akhil Vaidya, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology, has been elected as Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. Fellows are elected yearly through a very selective, peer-review process, based on scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced microbiology. Vaidya is among 78 new international microbiologists elected in 2011.

Philadelphia, PA (May 27, 2011) - The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship recently selected a Drexel University College of Medicine student as a Greater Philadelphia Schweitzer Fellow for 2011-12. Victor Cueto, a third-year medical student, will join approximately 260 other Schweitzer Fellows from across the country in conceptualizing and carrying out service projects that address the unmet health needs of underserved individuals and communities.

Drexel Dermatology is offering FREE skin cancer screenings on Thursday, May 26, from 9-11 a.m. The screenings will be given at Drexel Dermatology offices at 219 N. Broad Street, 4th floor. No appointments are necessary.

Stanley W. Silverman, former president and CEO of PQ Corporation, has been named chairman of the Drexel University College of Medicine Board of Trustees. A Drexel alumnus, Silverman has served on the University’s board of trustees for 11 years and the College of Medicine board for four. He replaces Manny Stamatakis, who announced earlier this year that he would step down as chairman of the board in May.
