The one-year Medical Science Preparatory (MSP) certificate program is designed to help students enhance their academic credentials for application to medical or other health professional schools. The program has been designed to help students improve their academic science background and help them prepare for their MCAT test or improve MCAT scores. The curriculum offers graduate-level biological science coursework; undergraduate review courses in physics, chemistry, and organic chemistry; community outreach; and an in-house MCAT preparation review course.
Curriculum
Students in the MSP program take six graduate-level courses, including:
- Concepts in Biochemistry and Cell Biology
- Graduate Pharmacology
- Special Topics in Anatomy
- Biological Function and Regulation
- Laboratory Techniques in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
- Community Dimensions in Medicine
Included in the curriculum are undergraduate level review courses in physics and chemistry designed to help with the physical and biological science sections of the MCAT. In addition, the classes incorporate a complete year-long MCAT preparation course that includes six mock MCAT exams administered on the weekends under actual MCAT conditions.
Admissions
Applicants to the MSP program must have already fulfilled undergraduate pre-medical requirements and demonstrated mastery of the material at a minimum grade of C or better. These requirements include a year of biology, chemistry, physics and organic chemistry, including respective laboratory sections. Applicants are required to submit offical MCAT scores if the exam was taken, or general GRE scores in lieu of the MCAT. MCAT scores of 17 to 27 and GRE scores in the 70th percentile are acceptable for application to the program. An undergraduate math/science and overall GPA of 3.00 are appropriate for application. Health care-related experiences, community service, research, leadership and extracurricular activities are also taken into consideration with the application.
Successful Program Completion
Students who complete and pass all courses included in the MSP program curriculum, achieve a minimum 2.75 graduate GPA, and release new official MCAT scores to the program will be granted a certificate of program completion. Students typically begin the application to medical or other health professional schools following successful completion of this one-year program. Students continue to receive assistance from the office during this application process.
Students achieving a minimum 3.00 graduate GPA and an MCAT score of 27 or better are granted a guaranteed acceptance into the Master of Biological Science (MBS) program. Completion of the MBS program leads to a Master of Science degree.
