At times, implanted pacemakers or defibrillators fail or become infected. The Drexel cardiac electrophysiology, arrhythmia team is one of the most experienced in the world in techniques of lead extraction, i.e., safely removing leads (implanted wires) from these devices through the blood vessels, without the need for open chest surgery.
A multidisciplinary approach with heart surgeons, infectious disease specialists, and our highly skilled heart rhythm specialists has allowed the Drexel program in pacemaker and defibrillator lead extraction and management to exceed all other programs in a five-state region in volume of these procedures performed. This has established and maintains excellence in our approach, one that is individualized to the needs of each patient.
Our physicians and skilled nurse practitioners have the experience to deal with pacemaker and implanted defibrillator problems of any complexity, from the complicated procedure of removing the devices and leads, to surgical wound care to maximize healing, to counseling with respect to the best and safest approach for any patient who experiences pain, infection, or malfunction of their implanted heart rhythm device.
