There are more and more female athletes today and this has led to a higher rate of injuries, including overuse injuries, in women.

Studies have found that women have a higher rate of stress fractures than men. Stress fractures are tiny cracks in a bone. They are caused by repetitive motions, often by overuse — such as repeatedly jumping up and down or running long distances. Stress fractures also can happen during normal use of a bone that's been weakened by a condition such as osteoporosis.

To help prevent sports injuries:

  • Warm up properly before exercise
  • Stretch after warm-up or exercise
  • Cool down after exercise

Drexel Sports Medicine diagnoses and manages injuries and medical conditions for active women and female athletes. If you are having pain or discomfort from a sports-related activity, please contact us right away.
