Prevention
Our specialists are skilled in working with patients and their physicians to prevent the development and progression of kidney disease in patients with diabetes and/or hypertension. This skill is important because high blood pressure, known often as the “silent killer,” can lead to stroke, heart failure, and kidney failure if not properly treated. Diabetes can also lead to major complications without proper prevention and treatment. We at Drexel University College of Medicine™ are aware of the complex nature of the medical problems of diabetics, and so work as members of an inter-and multidisciplinary care team. We invite, whenever appropriate, the input of dietitians, social workers, nurses, pharmacologists, and surgeons.

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
We diagnose and treat patients with mild, as well as severe, high blood pressure. Our physicians skillfully individualize drug treatment for high blood pressure in order to normalize pressure with few, if any, side effects

Kidney Conditions
Patients come to us for evaluation and treatment of a variety of kidney conditions such as bloody urine, protein in the urine, kidney stones, glomerulonephritis, urinary tract infections, abnormalities of electrolytes, and renal failure. Our physicians are experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions with the appropriate technology, including the interpretation of renal scans, CAT scans, and MRI, as well as the application of invasive procedures such as renal biopsy.

Chronic Renal Failure (Chronic Kidney Disease)
In those instances where patients develop chronic kidney disease, our physicians can provide multiple levels of care, depending on the patient’s needs. Our state of the art outpatient dialysis units provide patients with hemodialysis in a cutting-edge, comfortable environment in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of renal nurses, social workers, dietitians, and technical staff. In addition, we have the expertise to train suitable and interested patients in home dialysis, which can include continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, nocturnal peritoneal dialysis, and home hemodialysis. If it is appropriate for a patient to undergo home dialysis, our staff is prepared to provide any necessary technical or psychological support.

Renal Transplantation
Some patients with chronic kidney disease are suitable for kidney transplantation. Our transplant team at Hahnemann University™ Hospital is one of the largest in the region, and has the capacity to evaluate patients for living related, unrelated, and cadaver donor kidney transplants. Our interdisciplinary teams provide for the immunosuppression necessary to prevent kidney rejection, as well as support patients during the pre- and postoperative period.
