About the Drexel University College of Medicine Multiple Sclerosis Program
Multiple sclerosis affects every person differently. Therefore, each patient has unique treatment needs. All MS patients receive a thorough neurologic evaluation. Problems pertaining to multiple sclerosis are identified, and medication or other therapies are prescribed where appropriate. Referrals to physicians in other specialties, such as internal medicine, gynecology, and urology, can be made when necessary. A nurse helps patients learn self-care activities such as bladder management. For many patients, these activities are stepping stones to a more independent lifestyle. Other nursing services include patient and family education, patient advocacy, and coordination of services available at the Center and in the community.

About Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, potentially disabling disease that affects the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves) by attacking the protective covering that surrounds the nerves. The resulting damage interferes with the brain's ability to effectively communicate with the rest of the body. The range and severity of symptoms varies depending on where the deterioration occurs. In some cases, numbness in the limbs, paralysis, or loss of vision may occur. The progression, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from person to person.
Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis
Early diagnosis of MS can be difficult as symptoms may disappear without warning, sometimes for months at a time.
Although multiple sclerosis can occur at any age, it most often begins in people between the ages of 20 and 40. Women are more likely to develop multiple sclerosis than are men.
