Understanding Finances in Academic Medicine: Balancing Multiple Missions

Educational Goals:
Attendees will obtain a better understanding of a clinical department's financial operations in the face of multiple missions at an academic medical center. Topics include budget planning and preparation, business and financial management, automated financial systems used at DUCOM, financial reporting, and faculty responsibilities for proper billing. The session will end with an interactive discussion with attendees to highlight personal responsibilities and strategies that are associated with the financial aspects of clinical medicine at DUCOM.

Educational Goals:
Attendees will obtain tools for success and learn the strategic skills necessary to manage a research laboratory including the importance of having a laboratory leadership vision, building and staffing an effective research team, data management and lab notebook use, lab finances, running effective lab meetings, managing equipment and other resources, and overarching "do's and don'ts" in laboratory management.

Attendees will learn important requirements and strategic techniques for promotion and tenure as basic scientists, clinicians and clinical educators that include: gaining an understanding of DUCOM's policies of promotion; developing a personal promotion plan that is effective, strategic and proactive; maintaining substantial and adequate documentation of teaching, scholarly activity and service; and learning how to network effectively to develop one's academic career.
