The goal of the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program is to provide each fellow with broad exposure to a full spectrum of acute and chronic cardiovascular diseases. Our program emphasizes accurate clinical diagnosis, appropriate utilization of diagnostic testing and integration of data, and implementation of effective, evidence-based management strategies. At the completion of the program, the fellow will be able to proficiently provide comprehensive cardiology care, adhere to the highest standards of professional conduct and respond sensitively to the needs of each patient. The faculty, staff and administration are fully committed to this educational program, and provide all of the appropriate resources and facilities necessary to achieve these educational goals.
Our ACGME-accredited Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program comprises a minimum of three years of training. The first two years are focused on comprehensive clinical care. During the third year, fellows sub-specialize with additional emphasis on research. This third year is essentially an elective year with a rotation schedule tailored to the interests of each fellow. Certain subspecialty areas, such as electrophysiology and interventional cardiology, require a fourth year of fellowship for certification.
Rotations are available in the following areas:
- Cardiac catheterization laboratory
- Cardiac care unit
- Clinical and consultative cardiology
- Congenital heart disease service at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children
- Cardiac computed tomographic imaging and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging
- Echocardiography
- Heart station
- Nuclear cardiology
- Cardiothoracic surgery service
- Electrophysiology
- Heart failure/transplant
- Cardiac rehabilitation
The last three of these include an outpatient experience in addition to the usual continuity clinic.
Research time is considered to be concurrent with these rotations; special requests for time exclusively devoted to research will be considered as the need arises.
In addition to our programs in electrophysiology and interventional cardiology, fellowships in cardiovascular imaging and heart failure are now under development. Research collaborations with Drexel University faculty and basic science researchers are also available.
