Overview of the Dermatopathology Fellowship Program
Program Director: Herbert B. Allen, M.D.
Program Coordinator: Lissette Murria
Drexel University College of Medicine offers a one year (PGY-5) accredited dermatopathology fellowship. The program is sponsored jointly by the Department of Dermatology and the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The fellowship is designed to provide intensive training in dermatopathology for board certified or board eligible graduates of either dermatology or pathology residency programs. For pathology trainees entering the program, half of the year will be focused on signing out dermatopathology cases, and the other half will be spent in clinical dermatology. For dermatology trainees who are in the program, six months of training in anatomic pathology is incorporated into the year.
The year is structured so that you can maintain continuity with the dermatopathology service. The majority of the dermatopathology signout occurs at the Institute for Dermatopathology in Newtown Square, PA. This 10 dermatopathologist laboratory accessions over 150,000 specimens per year. Approximately 40,000 cases annually are signed out by the dermatopathology fellow and either Richard Spielvogel, M.D. or Gary Kantor, M.D. (both former chairmen of the Department of Dermatology).
Fellows will be expected to attend and participate in all of the dermatology conferences, and present the pathologic findings at monthly dermatology grand rounds and at the annual Philadelphia Dermatologic Society meeting. The fellow will present didactic sessions for the residents in both dermatology and pathology, as well as medical students.
Applicants for the Drexel University College of Medicine fellowship in dermatopathology must be board certified or eligible for certification in anatomic pathology, combined anatomic and clinical pathology, or dermatology.
