Consultations
The Division of Medical Toxicology is one of the major clinical and teaching divisions within the Department of Emergency Medicine. Our medical toxicology fellows carry out over 1,000 bedside patient consultations annually at our four core hospitals:
- Hahnemann University Hospital
- St. Christopher's Hospital for Children
- Mercy Hospital of Philadelphia
- Fitzgerald-Mercy Hospital
Fellows also take call for the regional Poison Center where they provide consultations for the hospitals in Delaware, Eastern Pennsylvania, and the Delaware Valley. Additionally, faculty within the division provide consultative services for local and federal government agencies, the Philadelphia Zoo, various corporations, the legal community, and industry, with regard to issues involving medical, occupational, environmental, hazardous material and forensic toxicology. These serve as excellent opportunities to further instruct fellows in the science and art of medical toxicology.
Conferences
One of the most exciting aspects of fellowship is the opportunity to attend regional, national, and international conferences, learn about cutting edge research, and meet other toxicologists from around the country and the world. In the past several years, fellows in our program have attended conferences in Denver, San Antonio, Toronto, Stockholm, and Bordeaux.
Clinics
We also operate an outpatient clinic that sees referral patients with concerns for occupational, environmental, and medical toxicology concerns from around the country.
Certification
Our fellowship is approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education allowing program graduates to sit for the Medical Toxicology board exam. We take two fellows each year.
Mission
Our mission is to educate clinical toxicologists with a broad experience in medical, occupational, environmental and forensic toxicology. Recent graduates of our fellowship program have gone on to serve as community- or university-based medical toxicologists, and have served in the Epidemiology Investigative Service of CDC/NIOSH. The division has hosted visiting fellows from Thailand and India.
