The Drexel University College of Medicine/Hahnemann University Hospital Sports Medicine Fellowship program offers a sound, balanced educational program, which gives fellows a wide range of clinical knowledge and the confidence to apply that knowledge throughout the fellowship and beyond. It is a broad based program, which is designed to offer the fellow significant flexibility based on prior experience. The one-year experience is centered on a series of primarily longitudinal educational activities designed to prepare the fellow for the successful practice of primary care sports medicine.
This community based, university affiliated fellowship program is based at Hahnemann University Hospital. Please note that fellows are employed by and insured by the hospital. They are not employees of Drexel University College of Medicine.
Academic Experience
After a period of orientation, the fellows’ clinical experience is complemented by weekly didactic time that includes sports medicine and orthopedic lectures. Monthly journal clubs and dedicated research time round out the educational experience. Additionally, fellows participate in anatomy lab instruction, radiology conferences, and research seminars. They take an active role in teaching medical students and family medicine residents and are expected to participate in local and national sports medicine conferences.
Clinical Experience
As a Primary Care Sports Medicine fellow, you will have plenty of exposure to a diverse athletic population including men and women of every age and athletic ability. You will also develop your expertise in diagnosing and managing medical illnesses and injuries related to sports and exercise including:
- Injury prevention
- Conditioning
- Pre-participation evaluation
- Management of acute and chronic illness or injury
- Rehabilitation
- Surgical assistance for common orthopedic sports medicine procedures (ACL reconstructions, shoulder labrum repairs, etc.)
- Team coverage (two high school football teams, Division I college sports at Drexel University and St. Joseph’s University
- Mass event coverage (Keystone State Games/Pennsylvania Senior Games, Philadelphia Marathon)
Clinical time for the fellow includes the following:
- One half-day per week as sports medicine provider at Drexel University Student’s Health Center
- One half-day per week of primary care clinic
- Office time with sports medicine faculty and sports orthopedists throughout the year
- Office time with hand specialists, physical therapists, exercise physiologists, musculoskeletal radiologists, pediatric orthopedists, strength and conditioning specialists and others
- Weekly training rooms at colleges and high schools and game coverage
