About Drexel University College of Medicine's Department of Anesthesia
The Department of Anesthesia at Drexel University College of Medicine is based in the heart of Philadelphia at Hahnemann University Hospital. The residency program was initially established in 1885 at Hahnemann Medical College (now HUH), which is the main teaching institution for the residency program.
Hahnemann University Hospital is an accredited Level 1 trauma center that has over 550 beds and is also a major tertiary referral center. Over 14,000 procedures involving anesthesia are performed yearly, along with 2,500 deliveries annually, providing excellent clinical exposure. Residents are able to satisfy their ACGME requirements by the completion of their second year.
Residents are exposed to a myriad of cases that allows them to develop greater clinical experience and judgment. Being trained at a Level 1 trauma center, residents learn to efficiently evaluate patients and further learn to deal with many difficult airway scenarios during these rotations. Anesthesia residents rotate at three hospitals, all within the greater Philadelphia area:
Each institution offers different clinical experiences to the resident. On average, a resident takes four calls a month and usually has two weekends off each month. Residents are very well within the 80 hour ACGME rules, and the sign-out list prevents the same resident from working late each day.

Living in Philadelphia
On their time off, residents enjoy the many benefits of Philadelphia, which range from museums and art galleries to a wide range of restaurants. Philadelphia is a city that is full of culture, along with a great history. Residents can walk down streets in the oldest neighborhood in the country and experience American history at its fullest. We encourage all of our residents to experience Philadelphia, and we look forward to working with each of you.
