The Department of Anesthesiology at Hahnemann University Hospital, located in downtown Philadelphia, has a long tradition of training high quality consultant physicians who work in all facets of anesthesiology and beyond.
For more than 30 years the anesthesiology residency training program has been offering residents exceptional experience providing patient care in all subspecialties of anesthesiology, including but not limited to heart and liver transplantation, advanced cardiac procedures, high-risk obstetric care, pain medicine, and critical care. Our extensive didactic curriculum is presented in a nurturing and friendly environment. The departmental mission, respecting people, begins with our patients and with the people we educate, and extends to everyone with whom we interact. We respect the diversity and uniqueness of our residents by providing a tailored approach to the educational continuum, one that provides growth to full potential by capitalizing on individual strengths and resolving individual weaknesses. During the CA-1 through CA-3 years each resident receives a personalized education. Faculty mentorship is constant, starting with entry into the program when each person is assigned a faculty advisor.
Residents spend time at three different hospitals. Hahnemann University Hospital is a large tertiary care and level 1 trauma center and serves as the main teaching site. Hahnemann provides a multitude of different services affording the resident unique learning opportunities and experience with state-of-the-art anesthesia care. St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children provides care for a solely pediatric population. Anesthetics at this institution include the care of pediatric cardiac patients and advanced pediatric general anesthetics; St. Christopher's is also a level 1 trauma center. Abington Memorial Hospital is a large community-based hospital. At this center our residents gain exposure to anesthesiology practice outside of a large university-based program. During their time here residents focus on the care of the neurosurgical population.
As program director, I take pride in the quality of education residents receive. The diverse and outstanding faculty are excellent teachers and take the time to form personal bonds with each and every resident. Upon completion the department enjoys the success of graduates who enter clinical, academic, or research endeavors.
