Letter from the Program Director

The resident education program at Drexel University College of Medicine has a long tradition of educating competent clinicians to care for women's obstetrical, gynecological and primary care needs. The current program represents an evolution of two historic training programs in OBGYN: MCP, the Medical College of Pennsylvania, originally known as the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, was the first medical school in the United States to train women to take of women; and Hahnemann University, the first medical school to promote a complementary medicine approach called homeopathy. Today, the DUCOM program is firm in its mission of education and patient care and is accredited by the RRC.

The program is a four-year comprehensive training experience which is heavily clinical in the provision of care to the community around the hospitals and a middle to upper-middle community in the surrounding areas. As a program director with over 20 years experience, I recognize the importance of recruiting not only qualified, but also committed, individuals with diverse backgrounds, interests and talents. The department at Drexel University College of Medicine is very interested in promoting and maintaining the diversity of its applicants to enhance the educational experience for all those involved.

As an academic program, we are dedicated to incorporating research. We emphasize the importance of critical appraisal of current literature and research findings in our clinical endeavors and didactic sessions including an in-depth Journal Club. All senior residents must present a research project of peer review quality during their senior year at the department resident research day, as well as to the regional Obstetrical Society of Philadelphia and the Drexel University Research Day.

As a clinical program with ties to many communities, we recognize the importance of providing a wide breadth of clinical experience in all areas of women’s health care including, obstetrics, gynecology, maternal fetal medicine (MFM), reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI), gynecologic oncology (GONC), emergency medicine, surgical intensive care, primary and ambulatory care, specialty care for women with HIV, reproductive management services for women including all options, and neonatal care.

As a part of a community, we recognize the importance of giving back and have structured the program to have residents deeply involved in medical student education and participation in department activities.  Many of our residents have also gotten involved in local, regional and national specialty-specific groups.

Residents are evaluated in a manner that emphasizes their abilities and competence in the areas of patient care, medical knowledge, practiced-based learning and improvement, interpersonal skills and communication, professionalism, and systems-based practice. We are very proud of our graduates and their academic and clinical achievement. DUCOM graduates are respected and desired by local and national academic institutions and practices.

Finally, we are extremely proud of our new affiliation with Saint Peter's University Hospital in New Jersey. They have an exciting new community OB/GYN program which you may want to consider as well in your search for residency.

I would be happy to speak with any candidate with questions regarding our educational programs.

Sincerely,
Mark B. Woodland, MS MD, FACOG
Program Director and Clinical Professor
Associate Dean of GME
