Rotation Locations

The program utilizes four main inpatient facilities: Hahnemann University Hospital (HUH), Bryn Mawr Hospital/Main Line Fertility (BMH/MLF), Mercy Hospital of Philadelphia/Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital (MHOP/MFitz), Kennedy Memorial Hospital-University Medical Center Stratford (KMH).

  • Hahnemann University Hospital (HUH) is a 500+ bed university hospital located in center city Philadelphia. The program relocated to this site in November of 1999 with the resumption of full obstetrics and gynecologic services. This facility includes departmental offices, resident facilities, redecoration and out-fitting of labor and delivery and postpartum, new operating room equipment for gynecologic surgery and incorporation into the rest of the clinical services in the institution. Additionally, there are new family waiting facilities, a 20-bed neonatal intensive care unit, an 8-bed private postpartum suite, an expanded L&D with 7 LDR’s and three new triage rooms. There are two main operating rooms suites available to the residents in this institution: the short procedure unit (SPU), an 8-room complete-day-stay-type OR, and the 8th-floor OR, a 12-room intensive main operating room suite. There are two main intensive care areas as well as complete medical and surgical floors. The main residents' continuity practice is located on this campus. This serves as the primary inpatient facility for the residency program.

Research in the OBGYN Department at Drexel University College of Medicine is now in the top 20 out of 125 academic institutions for NIH research funding. Concentration is on Genetics Studies and Maternal Fetal Medicine International Network Programs.

  • Bryn Mawr Hospital/Main Line Fertility (BMH/MLF) Senior residents rotate through the private offices (Paoli, Bryn Mawr, Oaks) of MLF. Residents participate in clinical care of infertility and gynecologic endocrinology patients. During this rotation, residents participate in all procedures pertinent to this area of the Obstetric and Gynecology residency program working side by side with the attending physician. They participate in clinical patient evaluation, IVF stimulation protocols, ultrasonographic and endocrine evaluation of congenital adrenal hyperplasia, controlled ovarian hyperstimulation, IUI and hysteroscopic and hysterosalpingography techniques. Residents are under the direct supervision of 4 different REI specialists and thus are exposed to different approaches to the management of infertility.  At the end of this rotation, the senior resident presents to the department, in a format of Grand Rounds, a topic in REI and “My 3 more interesting cases” which he /she prepares under the supervision of Dr. Blasco, the REI Director.
During the first year of residency, residents are exposed to patients with endocrine and infertility disorders. During this rotation they work under Blasco's tutelage and attend half-day sessions in the REI Clinic. During this period, residents present in a conference format, “The case of the week“. An appropriately associated topic in REI is discussed by the Director of the REI Section in relation with the clinical presentation assigned to the resident in conjunction with the established 2-year curriculum.
  •  Mercy Hospital of Philadelphia/Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital (MHOP/MFitz) The residents cover the OR cases at both hospitals.  The residents review the cases in the holding area, write a pre-op note assessment and greet the patients. They first assist on all of the cases, write post-op orders and round on the patient post-op. GYN consults on the floor and in the ER are done by the resident with the faculty present and involved. The residents also respond to night call emergency OR needs at the two facilities usually for surgical treatment of ectopic pregnancies. The attending makes the assessment for OR need and subsequently calls the resident in to first assist on the case.
  • Kennedy Memorial Hospital-University Medical Center Stratford (KMH) Residents, during their PGY3 and PGY4 urogynecology rotation, rotate through the private office of Dr. Tim McKinney (a renowned urogynecologist and minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon). The residents spend about 2 days per week with Dr. McKinney and move between his private office and his main inpatient service at KMH.  Dr. McKinney performs almost 500 procedures annually between his clinical office and the inpatient service at KMH. Residents are responsible for the inpatient care of his patients when they are assigned to this site. This is predominantly a surgical experience rotation. However, they also may go to his office for in-office procedure exposure and to observe continuity between the inpatient and ambulatory setting. They are introduced to the latest minimally invasive techniques and find this part of the rotation not only educationally exciting but professionally enhancing.
