Conferences
Conferences are highly interactive and comprise a large segment of resident education. Conferences are held at each of the various institutions weekly. Conferences being held at Hahnemann University Hospital are primarily held on Mondays from 6:30 to 9:00 a.m. and consist of journal club, topic presentations by each resident, visiting professors, ethics and risk management, quality assurance, and grand rounds. The weekly morning conference schedule at Hahnemann is as follows:
Monday – Comprehensive Clinical and Basic Science Conference
Tuesday – Sports/Foot and Ankle Surgery Conference
Wednesday – Hand Surgery Conference
Thursday – Trauma/Adult Reconstruction Conference
Friday – Trauma/Spine Conference.
The conferences are in the lecture and discussion format and provide an excellent opportunity for education and interaction between residents and attendings. Grand rounds are typically held monthly and include visiting professors of national renown on Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m.
Instructional anatomy dissections are performed in the winter sessions.
Research
Resident research activity in the orthopaedic surgery program is primarily initiated and supervised by the faculty. Joint research projects therefore are common and encouraged. Each resident will be required to initiate and complete at least one project. An annual resident research day is held in May of each year, where all projects are presented formally to the department.
Evaluations
Residents are evaluated quarterly by all attendings on their service.
Please note that residents are employed by and insured by the hospital; they are not employees of Drexel University College of Medicine.
