 Thank you for your interest in the Drexel University College of Medicine/Hahnemann University Hospital Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training Program.
We believe our program develops empathic physicians’ expert in developmental assessment, diagnosis and treatment of childhood psychiatric disorders. Didactic experiences emphasize the role of biological and genetic influences, individual and family dynamics and cultural contexts on both normal development and psychiatric illness. We emphasize state-of-the-art treatment planning and practical implementation throughout all clinical experiences while modeling the need to balance both personal and professional responsibilities.
Clinical sites include: Friends Hospital, located in the northeast section of Philadelphia; Northwest Human Services (NHS), a large multisite multi-program corporation serving publicly insured children, youth and adults; St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, one of the premier pediatric hospitals in Philadelphia, and Woods Services, a community and residential program facility for children and adolescents with mental retardation, pervasive developmental disorders, autism spectrum disorders, brain injury, and other neurological and psychiatric disorders.
The metropolitan Philadelphia area has one of the lowest housing costs on the Eastern coast. Philadelphia is large enough to offer any cultural or sports activity you may want, yet small enough that you will easily get to know your neighbors who will help you find your local market or cleaner.

William A. Sonis, MD, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and did his General and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry residency at the Western Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute. He is board certified in Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Sonis is active in many national and regional organizations and is a 2008 recipient of the ACGME Parker J. Palmer “Courage to Teach Award” |
