The radiation oncology residency training program at Drexel University College of Medicine provides a thorough knowledge of clinical radiation oncology, medical oncology, radiation biology, radiation physics, and biostatistics through broad clinical experience, varied research opportunities, and detailed didactic sessions. The radiation oncology department is an integral part of the Hahnemann University Hospital Cancer Center and the Rosenfeld Cancer Center at Abington Memorial Hospital where residents work with all oncologic disciplines in order to provide the best cancer care to two diverse populations of patients. In addition, pediatric oncology patients are referred to the department at Hahnemann Hospital from St. Christopher's Hospital for Children.
The duration of the training program in radiation oncology is four (4) years and, in large part, the core curriculum is clinical. Residents are taught during three-month rotations assigned to a clinical faculty member in a process of on-going, interactive, one-to-one teaching at Hahnemann University Hospital and Abington Memorial Hospital. There are rotations in radiation biology, radiation physics as well as rotations outside the department in medical oncology, stereotactic radiosurgery/cyberknife, and pediatric radiation oncology. As part of the academic program during the four years there are didactics, visiting professor lectures, journal club, on-going tumor boards for a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, with radiologists, medical oncologist, surgeons, radiation oncologist, pathologist and other specialists in attendance.
The Department of Radiation Oncology is proud of its residency educational program and what our residents have accomplished. We respect the diversity and uniqueness of our residents by providing a tailored approach to the educational continuum -- one that provides growth to full potential by capitalizing on individual strengths and resolving individual weaknesses. We have a strong commitment to our patients and the community and have developed a strong clinical program with an oncology-trained nurse and board certified radiation therapist, dosimetrists and physicists. We encourage you to look at our program to see if it fits your needs. If you have any questions, please call or email me. Thank you for your interest and looking forward to meeting you.
