Surgery Residency - Letter from the Program Director

Letter from the Program Director

Since the merger of The Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University in 1994, the Drexel University College of Medicine Department of Surgery has undergone dramatic growth. Weathering a medical-economic maelstrom in 1998, the Department of Surgery emerged with renewed energies, keeping strong the surgical traditions of both great schools. Under the leadership of Dr. William C. Meyers, the program has continued to improve the clinical and educational experience provided. Capitalizing on a new relationship with Drexel University, the program now offers the opportunity to participate in “cutting-edge” research in biomedical technology.

The Department of Surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine encompasses the Divisions of General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Trauma and Critical Care, Transplantation and Urology. Residents also gain experience through rotations with the Departments of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery and Plastic Surgery.

Broad clinical training is provided by rotations through the University’s two main teaching hospitals, Hahnemann University Hospital and St. Peter's University Hospital; two community hospitals, Bryn Mawr, and St. Mary's Medical Center; as well as through St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, a pediatric specialty hospital. Experience in burn management is provided by rotation through the Burn Unit at Crozer Chester Medical Center.
