FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

General

Does ELAM offer a program every year?
Yes. ELAM is a yearlong program that begins in the late spring of each year. The application process begins in late November and applicants are notified in early April.

What are the estimated total costs to attend the ELAM Program?
The overall costs for the ELAM Program are comparable to other national leadership programs in higher education and considerably less than those of physician executive programs. Tuition covers the costs of course materials, faculty, conference site expenses, continuing medical education fees, special events, and most meals for the fellows. See Schedule and Costs for details.

What is the time commitment for participating in the ELAM Program?
ELAM is an intensive, yearlong program requiring a significant time commitment. While most fellows successfully complete the program while continuing their other responsibilities, we strongly recommend that candidates negotiate for some release time if they decide to apply. During the ELAM program year, fellows attend three onsite sessions of approximately one week each: two (fall and spring) in the Philadelphia area and one in conjunction with the Association of American Medical Colleges' annual November meeting (location varies). See Schedule & Costs for more information about dates and locations. In addition to the weeklong residencies, fellows complete a variety of readings and other assignments, including a significant institutional leadership project that provides an opportunity for them to test their new skills and learnings. fellows are also expected to participate regularly in ELAM’s online learning platform.

How are applications evaluated for acceptance to ELAM?
The Admissions Committee, which includes deans, other senior administration officials and ELAM alumnae, reviews all application materials submitted by the candidates. Letters of support are evaluated to determine the level of institutional commitment to the candidate's development and advancement, the existence of any mentoring plans, and the nominator’s/recommender’s view of the candidate’s leadership potential. Beyond the academic and administrative credentials in the applicant's C.V., the committee examines the personal statements for indications of a desire and readiness for leadership. See the Candidate Selection Criteria and Mentoring Best Practices for further details.

Is ELAM the right program for me?
ELAM is an executive leadership program for women pursuing leadership positions at academic health centers. ELAM's curriculum mixes traditional business subjects with topics pertinent to AHC management. It also includes group and individual assignments aimed at developing personal leadership. ELAM is not a clinical physician executive program, nor is it a medical education program. To help you decide if ELAM is for you, we encourage you to read the materials in the About ELAM and Application sections of this website. Contact ELAM fellows in your area. Consult with your Faculty Affairs dean. And of course, feel free to contact the ELAM office at elam@drexel.edu or 215-255-7309.

Do I have to be a computer expert or have a new computer to do the work in this program?
ELAM does have certain minimal computer requirements. These are:

  • Windows XP or later or Mac OS 10 or later
  • the latest version of Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari
  • Microsoft Office 2003 or later
  • Latest versions of Adobe Reader and Java
  • A laptop computer with CD drive to bring to the sessions, configured as above.

ELAM emphasizes technological proficiency ("e-leadership") as one of its core competencies, although we do not expect that everyone will be fully proficient when they enter the program. If you want to apply to ELAM and do not have a basic familiarity with the Internet or Microsoft Office, we strongly recommend that you take a class at your institution. ELAM staff are available to provide technological support and, if necessary, will work with fellows and their IT departments to problem solve. It is recommended that fellows bring their laptops to the sessions, so that they can more easily access the ELAM learning site and other resources.

Applying to ELAM

Can I apply if I do not have a medical or dental degree?
Yes. If you have a full-time faculty appointment as Associate Professor or Professor at a medical, dental or public health school and a Ph.D., Ed.D., MPH or similar degree, you are eligible to apply.

Can I apply if I am not at the level of associate professor?
To be considered for the ELAM program, candidates must hold at least a rank of associate professor or higher, and have some significant administrative experience. We suggest the AAMC Women in Medicine programs, the ADEA Leadership Institute, and other similar programs for less senior women.

Can I apply if my appointment is not in the medical, dental or public health schools?
Occasionally, an applicant has held a primary appointment outside the medical, dental or public health school and a secondary appointment within one of these schools. In this case the Admissions Committee considers the applicant's goals as they relate to seeking leadership within academic medicine, dentistry or public health.

Do you accept applications from osteopathic schools?
The current position of the ELAM Program Advisory Committee is to maintain the recruiting focus on increasing women leaders at allopathic medical, dental and public health schools. However, applications from osteopathic schools are not excluded. ELAM has had fellows with D.O. degrees who were either on the faculty of an allopathic medical school, or at an osteopathic school.

As part of my application, should I submit an article that I have written?
Yes, preferably one that is peer-reviewed. This article must be submitted electronically with your application, preferably a PDF file of the article as it appeared in the publication.

Do all the application materials have to be submitted together?
Your application, C.V. and journal article must all be submitted together online. Letters of support are submitted separately online by your dean and recommenders.

Can letters of support be faxed?

Because we send all application materials electronically to our Admissions Committee, letters of support must be submitted to ELAM in electronic form, using the online nomination/recommendation forms on this website.
In rare cases of technical difficulties, we have accepted e-mail recommendations if they answer the same questions and in the same format as the online form.

May I have a couple of days' extension to submit my application materials?
All materials, including nomination/recommendation letters, must be received in our office by the due date. If there is an emergency, please contact the ELAM office.

ELAM is a core program of the Institute for Women's Health and Leadership at Drexel University College of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pa. The Institute continues the legacy of advancing women in medicine that began in 1850 with the founding of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, the nation's first women's medical school and a predecessor of today's Drexel University College of Medicine.
