Candidate Selection Criteria
Candidates are evaluated in comparison with others in the current applicant pool and according to the following set of criteria, with the understanding that candidates and institutions may not meet them all:
A good candidate is one who:
-
has attained at least the rank of associate professor and has achieved significant administrative experience in personnel and budget matters, preferably both (e.g. Department Chair, Division or Section Chief)
-
expresses a clear desire for attaining a leadership position
-
embraces strategic risk-taking as part of her career path
-
realistically assesses her leadership opportunities, both internal and external
-
can expect advancement opportunities, either formal or informal, within her institution
Institutional support is demonstrated through:
-
a clear commitment to developing the candidate, reflected in the application, for formal or informal advancement and increased responsibility in the immediate to five-year range
-
a commitment to provide the necessary time for the candidate to fully participate in the ELAM Program and to complete her assignments
-
Dean’s commitment to attend the Forum on Emerging Issues with Fellow
-
financial support for the Fellow’s program fee, travel, and other expenses
-
salary continuation during the ELAM fellowship period
-
a formal professional development plan for the Fellow by the Dean, Chair or other senior administrator
-
assistance by the Dean and senior staff with assignments
-
provision of internal opportunities to develop a broader school- or university-wide view, e.g. appointment to search committee, task force
ELAM is a core program of the Institute for Women's Health and Leadership at Drexel University College of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pa. The Institute continues the legacy of advancing women in medicine that began in 1850 with the founding of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, the nation's first women's medical school and a predecessor of today's Drexel University College of Medicine.
